Bipedal ‘Cassie’ Becomes First Robot to Complete a 5K Run, University Says
A robot invented and built at Oregon State University made history by completing a five-kilometer (3.1 mile) course using machine learning, according to the university. The bipedal robot completed the course on the fields of OSU in 53 minutes, learning to control its pace on outdoor terrain. According to the university team, in the future, robots like Cassie will deliver packages, manage warehouses, and help people in their homes. The robot – introduced in 2017 – was developed at OSU with a $1 million grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the US Department of Defense. Since then, OSU students have been exploring machine learning options for the robot. Credit: Oregon State University via Storyful
