Egypt’s Ancient Khufu Boat Moved From Pyramids to Cairo Museum
King Khufu’s boat, the oldest and largest wooden boat ever found in Egypt, has been moved from next to the pyramids of Giza to a nearby museum, officials in Cairo said on August 7. The 4,600-year-old vessel was relocated to the Grand Egyptian Museum, due to open at the end of the year. The boat, which is 42 meters long and weighs 22 tons, took 48 hours to be transport to its new home. It arrived at the museum in the early hours of Saturday morning, local media reported. Video from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities shows the painstaking work carried out to move the boat. “Thank you for the huge efforts and dedicated work over many months from the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, the Supreme Council of Antiquities and all the state agencies, companies and workers who contributed to the successful transfer of an archaeological icon,” the ministry wrote on Facebook.
