Murray-Darling water trading system ‘inequitable’
Rural Journalist Peter Hunt says the Murray-Darling water trading system is “inequitable” for irrigators attempting to purchase water.
The Murray-Darling water trading system was the subject of a recent report by The Weekly Times, which revealed major water traders have a significant advantage over irrigators because of a digitised system which favours bigger players.
Mr Hunt says the irrigators have fallen afoul of a move to “more technically sophisticated systems, where the little guy just misses out”
“Ultimately it just comes down to having a fair and equitable system of trade, in an environment where water now is Australia’s most valuable commodity.
“We’re the driest continent on earth … We need to ensure this equity.”
