Night Sky Lit Up Near Athens as Greek Wildfires Worsen

Thousands of Greek residents were forced to evacuate their homes in northern suburbs of Athens after fires that broke out earlier this week grew significantly overnight, local media reported on August 6. A fire in Varympompi, north of Athens, was among the dozens of wildfires that broke out in Greece on Monday and Tuesday, and forced residents in the area to evacuate. On Wednesday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the suburb, warning of several “tough days” to come as temperatures in Greece remained high. On Thursday night into Friday morning, those fires worsened, forcing major evacuations. Wildfires were reported in a number of additional suburbs.
