A ‘Full Ship Shock Trial’ was carried out for the USS Gerald R Ford in the Atlantic Ocean off Jacksonville, Florida, on August 8, intended to test the “ship’s shock hardness and ability to sustain operations in a simulated combat environment.” The three tests were carried out for the navy’s newest aircraft carrier over a four-month period, with 40,000-pound underwater blasts detonating progressively closer to the ship’s hull.
