Taiwan symbolic of a ‘much greater threat’

Political Strategist Brigid Meney says Australia’s relationship with Taiwan is a “fraught” issue, given there is a “collective thinking that Taiwan has become symbolic of a much greater threat”. “When people see Taiwan, this little old country with a big history … they don’t just see Taiwan ... Japan sees what an invasion of Taiwan might look like for their own regions under threat by China," Ms Meney told Sky News host Cory Bernardi. She said despite Australia’s position as a ”middle power", the country should not “take the first punch” due to general international sentiments surrounding China. “I do think the conversations that we’ve seen at the G7 and other similar international events is quite indicative of where the sentiment is at the moment.”
